For several years I've been building a body of work based on
my exploration of found and recycled materials. I've taken up the process of hand grinding pigments, and building on this
tradition I'm developing new ways of appropriating this ancient technique. My materials are hand ground with a mortar and
pestle and then packed into a rock tumbler for hundreds of hours to produce a powder that can be easily suspended in a liquid
binder. Powdered eggshells leftover from my breakfast produce a creamy and versatile white. Mussel shells collected from
local beaches are pounded into a lavender gray. From earth gathered at distant locations, to materials collected in my own
back yard, my paintings are inspired by place and then made with the place itself.
